A brief Hilstory

My name is Hils (hence the title-clever eh?) I’m the wrong side of 36 years old and 2 years ago my husband and I decided to move to France. Why? Why not? I have been married for 8 years and have a daughter aged 5 (Moo) and a step daughter who lives in Wales, who is almost 14 (AJ). I used to work in theatre; entertainment, not medical, technical, not luvvie- but the decision to have a child put an end to all that (not exactly conducive hours for childcare/being able to spend any time with child). Not that I regret it for one minute, quite frankly 'the smell of the greasepaint' etc, was getting VERY stale, but more of that later I'm sure. As a working mum I was employed part time by a large health food chain and I must admit, after my initial nervousness at working in the 'real world', I really enjoyed my time on the shop floor.
After a wonderful break in Italy in January 2007 my hubby and I returned to the UK in a state of growing discontentment with our circumstances and the pressure of just getting by. Surely theres more to life than the daily grind? Hubs, (who is also in the entertainment industry), was getting more offers of freelance work and we decided that he should take the plunge and go full time freelance in the near future. After that it was a logical leap (well logical for us anyway) that as long as we lived somewhere near an airport- it didn’t really matter what country we were in, so why not just move to mainland Europe?
We decided on France as it's easy to get to from UK (for friends and family) and we love cheese so it seemed the logical choice (theres that logic word again...).
After much planning, a great deal of help and kindness from relatives, friends and random strangers, (and quite frankly a whole heap of winging it and dumb luck); we have done it and somehow arrived in rural France almost a year and a half ago.
I'd love for you to join me in our adventures as we continue to discover a whole new place and a completely different way of life.
